Lately, thanks to my pregnancy, my appetite has been on point—I seem to be thinking about food all the time, and I can’t help but indulge in a bit of a foodie spree. My dear sister and I have been meeting up almost every day after her hectic mornings of parenting, and while the cuteness of my nephews often makes me think, “I wish I could get married soon,” time really flies when you’re expecting.

Since my sister and I are both big fans of gukbap (a Korean soup with rice), we decided to hunt for a good gukbap spot near Dongseong-ro that day. However, we couldn’t find many options in the area. Then, I remembered Sodu Bul Sikdang and we headed straight there.

Located near Dongseong-ro’s Yakryeong-si and Jongno, Sodu Bul Sikdang is a popular spot, especially among students from nearby academies. What really impressed us was how quickly the food came out—as soon as we ordered, the meal was served, which had my sister and me laughing. For someone like me, who used to work and had to maximize every minute of lunch break, that speedy service is invaluable.

Sodu Bul Sikdang is already renowned as a must-visit spot. True to its reputation as a long-standing restaurant, it serves a hearty gukbap along with the usual banchan (side dishes). While most places offer similar side dishes, the star of the show here is undoubtedly the rich, flavorful broth.

The gukbap at Sodu Bul Sikdang features a deeply savory broth and generous portions of meat, making it incredibly satisfying. On that day, craving a bit of spice, we chopped up some cheongyang peppers and added them to our bowl—the result was simply outstanding. As expected from such a popular spot, the place started filling up around lunch time.
